The
song is about Shannon's first love, his 1964 Ford Galaxie. The car
is in the video for the song. He bought it in New Orleans.
The passengers door wouldn't open on it.
Shannon: "I have an old car fetish. I actually bought a Galaxie in New Orleans, it was my comfort zone. Whenever things are getting too much I go for a drive. I’d drive this car around New Orleans, and it had the old original radio since 1964, and you’d just listen to the radio and it seemed like all the radio stations that came through were radio stations were from the 1960s, sort of like Stephen King’s Christine! It was like being in a time warp."
Shannon: ["The car] was just my escape, my comfort zone from a lot of places that I found myself during my stay down there-I think a lot of people probably think that [in the song] I'm talking about the galaxies, as in the universe. And I've always liked the idea of wordplay and ambiguously writing about something so simple and making it sound so far out."
This
song was originally titled "I'm a Freak" but Shannon hated the original
lyrics and refused to sing them. During the recording sessions Shannon
would get frustrated and drive around the city in the car. Glen believes
it was during one of these drives that Shannon came up with his lyrics
to the song.
Timothy
Leary (legendary 60's LSD guru) appears in the video.
Brad: Jake Scott, the director, lives across the street from him (Leary) and said something to him, and Timothy Leary had heard of our band and liked this song, so he was up for it. We knew there had to be a significant person playing the role of the mad scientist.
This song reached # 37 in the UK single Charts and #8 in the USA Billboard modern rock charts.
This
song was the first, last and only single to be released from Soup.
Lyrics:
Is
this the place that I want to be
Is
it you who I want to see
Holding
on, hold it high, show me everything
And
you're leaving me, yeah you're leaving me
you're
leaving me with a hated identity
But
I keep on a comin' here and standing in this state
And
I'm never really sure if you'll take
What
I'm saying the right way
But
I'm not appalled or afraid
verbal
pocket play
Is
as discreet as I can muster up to be
Because
the Cadillac that's sittin' in the back
It
isn't me
Oh,
no, no, no it isn't me
I'm
more at home in my galaxie
Can
I do the things I wanna do
That
I don't do because of you
And
I'll take a left and I'll second
guess
into a total mess
And
you're leaving me
You're
leaving me with a hated identity
No
no no no it isn't me
No
it isn't me
I'm
more at home in my Galaxie
